Several shots are juggled around, and Caligula's line "Macro!" is moved to a different shot. The scene following the credits is shortened it cuts from Drusilla saying "he's not!" to Macro entering the room. The final several seconds of the scene are also cut to avoid exposing Drusilla's genitalia. Later in the scene, they cut back to the herd of sheep to hide the cutting of Caligula sucking Drusilla's breast. The opening scene is trimmed instead of panning from the herd of sheep to Caligula and Drusilla lying on the ground, looking at the leaves, then getting up to chase each other, it's simply a cut from the herd of sheep to Caligula and Drusilla getting up.The first R-rated cut to be released (October 1981) cut 51 minutes of footage (much of it for continuity purposes) and contained many alternate angles. In 2008 the BBFC passed the full hardcore version completely uncut and this was issued by Arrow Films in a 3 film set, also containing the Alternate Edit of the film (which replaced the Guccione-filmed hardcore scenes with footage not in the original edit) and the previously released R-rated print. This same print was re-released on video in 1998 and all early DVD releases. The eventual 1990 video release was the extensively edited U.S R-rated print and 55 minutes were cut from the film, resulting in most of the sex & violence scenes being removed in full or edited via long shot camera angles and a running time of around 98 minutes. This meant that additional edits were required and the film was then cut by a further 3 minutes by James Ferman himself with extensive edits to scenes of masturbation, lesbianism, anal fisting, castration, graphic stabbing scenes, explicit genital closeups and shots of babies being fed through phallic-shaped bottles. Dialling down the explicitness could have made this into a great drama. When the film was originally submitted in the UK it was cut by 8 minutes on legal grounds to qualify it for a possible private cinema club certificate, though the distributors decided instead to apply for an 'X' certificate for a wider cinema release.

The latter cheapens the film considerably. On the one hand you have a Machiavellian, almost Shakespearean, drama being played out, complete with stellar cast - Malcolm McDowell, Peter O'Toole, John Gielgud, Helen Mirren.

This mix of dark biopic and extreme explicitness makes for a very uneven film. The film needed to be edgy, and edgy it is. A large degree of graphicness is necessary to demonstrate the blackness of Caligula's mind and the decadence of the times, though not to the extent of this movie (no movie needs that level of explicitness!) but you can't make a film on Caligula and have it play out like a Disney film. The film is actually a decent drama, showing a man who's willing to do anything to take the throne, willing to dispose of trusty friends and allies to retain it, a man whose narcissism and search for pleasure know no bounds, a man totally out of touch with reality and with the people he rules, a man who has left the realm of sanity. There's more to this film that the gratuitous nudity and sex. Yet, while embarrassing to admit, it's not bad. Some of the scenes are pure B-grade exploitation-style to the point of being literal porn, hence the infamy. One of the more notorious films in cinematic history. We see his ambition, his scheming, his perversion and decadence, his brutality and his lunacy and how this impacts the people around him and the empire he leads. A dramatization of the ascent to Caesar and subsequent reign of Caligula, one of the most notorious leaders of ancient Rome.
